Job Description:
One of the nation’s top union structural steel erecting
companies is searching for a Director of Safety & Risk Management.
In business for over 45 years, the firm has grown significantly in
the last five years and continues to expand in scope and territory
to service a large and diverse client base such as Amazon, Ford and
Target as well as top construction firms and steel fabricators.
Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer (COO), this role will be
responsible for leading the safety function across all operations
and locations. The incumbent will be responsible for establishing
systems, protocols, and accountabilities that result in strong
employee engagement, compliance, and operational excellence. This
position will strategically balance costs and return on necessary
and desired safety initiatives. POSITION SUMMARY Essential
Functions ? Work directly with the Chief Operating Officer and
field leadership to establish and maintain a strong safety culture.
? Serve as subject matter expert on health and safety. ? Produce
policies, programs and initiatives to promote the safety program,
improve the company's safety record and correct identified
deficiencies. ? Ensure all safety programs and policies are
effectively communicated to all employees. ? Provide support to
project managers and superintendents to comply with the rules and
regulations related to safety. ? Develop job specific safety
requirements as needed. ? Work with local union representatives on
training and safety initiatives. ? Lead the development and
continuous improvement of safety policies and procedures. ? Ensure
that all health, safety, and environmental programs are designed to
be compliant with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other federal, state, and
local regulatory requirements. ? Develop and oversee all metrics
associated with safety performance. ? Conduct periodic safety
audits/inspections at jobsites to ensure compliance and support
area managers in following action plans, ensuring prompt resolution
of any identified issues. ? Drive consistency and standardization
of safety programs. ? Develop, deliver, and/or oversee training to
employees in accordance with OH&S Act, OSHA, environmental
regulations, and company standards. ? Prepare and present to the
senior leadership team on health and safety initiatives and
performance metrics. ? Identify safety issues and ways in which to
solve them. ? Maintain records of training and track the need for
training updates. ? Respond immediately to take control of major
incidents on job sites. ? Perform investigations, including root
cause analysis, and prepare detailed records of incidents. ? Lead
injury management efforts to ensure injured employees receive the
appropriate medical treatment. ? Develop light duty and
return-to-work strategies for injured employees. ? Work with the
workers’ compensation adjuster to close claims. ? Keep detailed and
accurate records of safety metrics and reports to Leadership Team
on safety issues, incidents and outcomes. ? Prepare individual
safety pre-qualification documents and presentations for client
submittals and marketing materials. ? Present safety program at
client meetings when invited. ? Ensure subcontractor compliance
with job site safety regulations and requirements. The information

needed. Specific Job Knowledge, Skill and Ability ? Minimum of 10
years of safety experience in the construction industry as a safety
professional. ? Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.
? Ability to demonstrate working knowledge of OSHA standards and
the ability to conduct training for each discipline. ? Have working
knowledge and ability to perform the essential functions listed in
this job description. ? Have solid interpersonal skills, must be
able to work well with the construction project site team, owners
and construction management firms. ? Must have the ability to speak
with construction workers in a respectful, coaching manner. ? Must
have the ability to use the power of persuasion to elicit
behavioral change. ? Must be familiar with heavy construction
tools, equipment, materials and methods of construction. ?
Familiarity with steel erection preferred. ? Moderate Proficiency
in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. ? Ability to travel for
meetings or job site visits - approximately 20%. Company Benefits
