Job Description:

Under the direction of the campus principal, the Director of Special Programs, and the Special education Teacher, the special education paraprofessional will provide quality support through interventions and instruction for students in special education. This role helps to facilitate a positive and productive learning environment. This role is designed to push in to classrooms to assist students during instruction in General Education and to provide small group intervention for students with the greatest needs. JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED Associates Degree or 2 years of college coursework completed Valid Texas Paraprofessional - Education Aide certification Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to demonstrate patience and empathy while working with struggling learners. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively. Ability to implement modifications and accommodations for students with varying cognitive abilities in the least restrictive environment. Ability to be flexible, organized, and to take initiative. Experience working with students who are identified as having significant needs, primarily in the areas of autism and intellectual disabilities (preferred). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist with preparing instructional materials that are accommodated or modified based on a student's Individual Education plan (IEP). Maintain academic and behavioral records and prepare required reports. Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, or using the restroom. Provide behavioral intervention as needed. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed. Assume responsibility for student learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs. Work with individual students or small groups to develop and enhance academic skill sets. Provide assistance with the collection of academic data and preparing reports. Assist the Special Education teacher in writing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) that are appropriate for each student. Tutor students in mornings or afternoons, as needed. Attend Special Programs department meetings, Special Education team meetings, and related trainings. Collaborate with the General Education teachers and the Special Education teacher to create a learning environment that meet student needs and is aligned with the philosophy and mission of Advantage Academy. Monitor and enforce the use of accommodations and modifications in the general education classrooms. Perform clerical and administrative support duties for the Special Education teacher and Director, such as prepare and deliver consent, notices, progress reports, goals, and accommodation sheets. Discuss students identified with special needs with the Special Education teacher and the General Education teachers regularly, respectfully, and constructively. Maintain confidentiality, as required by FERPA. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Experience: Some experience working with children in an instructional setting Some experience working with cultural and learning differences Bilingual (preferred) Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, and assist non ambulatory students.
